The Day of Judgment – Armageddon

The climax of the final war, Armageddon, is vividly described in Joel 3:12–16, Zechariah 14:1-3, and Revelation 16:12–16. The battle of Armageddon symbolizes the culmination of God’s judgment on the wicked and the ultimate triumph of righteousness. It is not merely a localized military confrontation but a spiritual warfare that signifies the end of the age.

sequences of this final war:

From the Tanakh and the New Covenant:

If we look at the full pictures of Joel 3:12–16, Zechariah 14:1-3, and Revelation 16:12–16, we can understand the following sequences of this final war:

  • The Euphrates River will completely dry up so that the kings from the East can cross the rivers without barriers (Rev 16:12);
  • These kings of the East are influenced by the demonic spirit to fight with Israel (Rev 16:13–14);
  • These kings of the East and all nations gather at a place called Armageddon, in Hebrew, it means “The Mountain of Megiddo” (Rev 16:15–16);
  • All nations will march up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat or Decision (Joel 3:12);
  • The Valley of Jehoshaphat/Decision is near Zion and also means Jerusalem, where the final battle will be fought with Israel (Joel 3:16; Zechariah 14:1–3)

a) Where is the location the nations will GATHER on the Day of Judgment?

From the New Covenant:

Yochanan through God’s message has illustrated more details in Revelation 16:14–16.  It says that all nations will gather at “The Mountain of Megiddo,” currently situated in northern Israel near Kibbutz Megiddo, about 19 miles south-east of Haifa, at the western edge of the Jezreel Valley.

b) Where is the location the nations will BATTLE on the Day of Judgment?

From the Tanakh:

Zechariah 14:1–3 prophesied that there would be a great war at the End Times.  It is the day of Judgment in Joel 3:9–16.  Joel has mentioned that all nations will march up to the valley of Jehoshaphat (also called the valley of Decision) for this war.

According to the biblical commentary the Logos explained:

“JEHOSHAPHAT, VALLEY OF (עֵמֶק יְהוֹשָׁפָט, emeq yehoshaphat). The name Jehoshaphat means “Yahweh will judge” and so fits well the context and larger theme of judgment in the book of Joel. The valley is also called the “valley of decision” (עֵמֶק הֶחָרוּ, emeq hecharu) (Joel 3:14), alluding to the valley as the place of God’s final judgment (Joel 3:9-16).”

Zechariah 14:1–3 says that a great war will be in Jerusalem.

Joel 3:9–16 mentioned this war in the valley of Jehoshaphat.

Therefore, it is believed that the location of the final war is in the Valley of Jehoshaphat/Decision; it should be near Jerusalem, also called Zion, according to Zechariah and Joel.

Thus [God] will judge among the nations and arbitrate for the many peoples,  and they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not take up sword against nation; They shall never again know war. Never again shall be heard there the sounds of weeping and wailing.  No more shall there be an infant or graybeard who does not live out their lifetime. Someone who dies at a hundred years shall be reckoned a youth, and one who fails to reach a hundred shall be reckoned accursed.  They shall build houses and dwell in them, they shall plant vineyards and enjoy their fruit.  They shall not build for others to dwell in, or plant for others to enjoy. For the days of my people shall be as long as the days of a tree, my chosen ones shall outlive the work of their hands.  They shall not toil to no purpose; they shall not bear children for terror, but they shall be a people blessed by GOD, and their offspring shall remain with them.  Before they pray, I will answer; while they are still speaking, I will respond.  The wolf and the lamb shall graze together, and the lion shall eat straw like the ox, and the serpent’s food shall be earth. See, a time is coming—declares GOD —when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors, when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, a covenant that they broke, though I espoused them—declares GOD, but such is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after these days—declares GOD: I will put my teaching into their inmost being and inscribe it upon their hearts. Then I will be their God, and they shall be my people.  No longer will they need to teach one another and say to one another, “Heed GOD ”; for all of them, from the least of them to the greatest, shall heed me—declares GOD. For I will forgive their iniquities, and remember their sins no more.”

Joel 3:9-16 ESV “9 Proclaim this among the nations: Consecrate for war; stir up the mighty men. Let all the men of war draw near; let them come up. 10 Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears; let the weak say, “I am a warrior.” 11 Hasten and come, all you surrounding nations, and gather yourselves there. Bring down your warriors, O Lord. 12 Let the nations stir themselves up and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations 13 Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Go in, tread, for the winepress is full. The vats overflow, for their evil is great. 14 Multitudes, multitudes, in the valley of decision! For the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision. 15 The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining. 16 The Lord roars from Zion, and utters his voice from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earthquake. But the Lord is a refuge to his people, a stronghold to the people of Israel.”
Joel 3:12-16 ESV “12 Let the nations stir themselves up and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations 13 Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe.

John 1:1-3 TLV
In the beginning was the Word. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were made through Him, and apart from Him nothing was made that has come into being.”

Revelation 6:1-2 ESV “1 Now I watched when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say with a voice like thunder, “Come!” 2 And I looked, and behold, a white horse! And its rider had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer.”

Revelation 6:12-17 ESV
“12 When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, 13 and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale. 14 The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. 15 Then the kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, 16 calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, 17 for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?”

Revelation 8:6-7 ESV
“6 Now the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to blow them. 7 The first angel blew his trumpet, and there followed hail and fire, mixed with blood, and these were thrown upon the earth. And a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.”

Revelation 8:8-9 ESV “8 The second angel blew his trumpet, and something like a great mountain, burning with fire, was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood. 9 A third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.”
Revelation 8:10-11 ESV “10 The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11 The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the water, because it had been made bitter.”
Revelation 8:12-13 ESV “12 The fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of their light might be darkened, and a third of the day might be kept from shining, and likewise a third of the night.13 Then I looked, and I heard an eagle crying with a loud voice as it flew directly overhead, “Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell on the earth, at the blasts of the other trumpets that the three angels are about to blow!”

Revelation 9:1-12 ESV

“1 And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit. 2 He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft. 3 Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth. 4 They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any green plant or any tree, but only those people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5 They were allowed to torment them for five months, but not to kill them, and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings someone. 6 And in those days people will seek death and will not find it. They will long to die, but death will flee from them. 7 In appearance the locusts were like horses prepared for battle: on their heads were what looked like crowns of gold; their faces were like human faces, 8 their hair like women’s hair, and their teeth like lions’ teeth; 9 they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the noise of their wings was like the noise of many chariots with horses rushing into battle. 10 They have tails and stings like scorpions, and their power to hurt people for five months is in their tails. 11 They have as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he is called Apollyon. 12 The first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still to come.”

Revelation 9:13-21 ESV “13 Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour, the day, the month, and the year, were released to kill a third of mankind. 16 The number of mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand; I heard their number. 17 And this is how I saw the horses in my vision and those who rode them: they wore breastplates the color of fire and of sapphire and of sulfur, and the heads of the horses were like lions’ heads, and fire and smoke and sulfur came out of their mouths. 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and smoke and sulfur coming out of their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, for their tails are like serpents with heads, and by means of them they wound. 20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, 21 nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.”

Revelation 11:1-2 ESV

“1 Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told, “Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, 2 but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months.

Revelation 11:3 TLV

“And I will grant authority to My two witnesses and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, dressed in sackcloth.

Revelation 11:7-13 TLV

“When they have finished their testimony, the beast that rises from the abyss will make war on them, and overcome them and kill them, and their corpses will lie in the open street of the great city that figuratively is called Sodom and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified. Some from the peoples and tribes and tongues and nations will look at their corpses for three and a half days, not allowing them to be placed into a grave. Those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them. They will celebrate and send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth. But after the three and a half days, the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet; and great fear fell on those who were watching them. Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here!” and they went up to heaven in a cloud, while their enemies watched them. At that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.

Revelation 12:14 TLV

But the woman was given two wings of the great eagle, so that she might fly away from the presence of the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is taken care of—for a time, times, and half a time.

Revelation 12:14-16 TLV

But the woman was given two wings of the great eagle, so that she might fly away from the presence of the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is taken care of—for a time, times, and half a time, and from out of his mouth, the serpent spewed water like a river after the woman, in order to sweep her away with a flood. But the earth came to the aid of the woman. The earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had spewed from his mouth.

Revelation 13:1-2 ESV “1 And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads. 2 And the beast that I saw was like a leopard; its feet were like a bear’s, and its mouth was like a lion’s mouth. And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority.”
Revelation 13:11-18 ESV “11 Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. 12 It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence, and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed. 13 It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, 14 and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain. 16 Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, 17 so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. 18 This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.”

Revelation 16:2 ESV

“So the first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth, and harmful and painful sores came upon the people who bore the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.”

Revelation 16:12 ESV “The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east.”
Revelation 16:12-16 ESV “12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east. 13 And I saw, coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs. 14 For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty. 15 (“Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!”) 16 And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon. ”

Revelation 16:13-14 TLV

Then I saw—coming from the dragon’s mouth and from the beast’s mouth and from the false prophet’s mouth—three unclean spirits like frogs. For they are demonic spirits performing miraculous signs, who go out to the kings of the whole world—to gather them for battle on the great day of Elohei Tzva’ot.

Revelation 16:14-16 ESV “14 For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty. 15 (“Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!”) 16 And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.”

Revelation 16:15-16 TLV

Revelation 19:11-21 TLV

Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The One riding on it is called Faithful and True, and He judges and makes war in righteousness. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and many royal crowns are on His head. He has a name written that no one knows except Himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which He is called is “the Word of God.” And the armies of heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. From His mouth comes a sharp sword—so that with it He may strike down the nations—and He shall rule them with an iron rod, and He treads the winepress of the furious wrath of Elohei-Tzva’ot. On His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “King of kings, and Lord of lords.” Then I saw a single angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he cried out to all the birds flying high in the sky, “Come, gather for the great banquet of God— to eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of generals and the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and those riding on them, the flesh of all men, both free and slave, both small and great! Also I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to make war against the One who sat on the horse and against His army. Then the beast was captured, and along with him the false prophet who had performed the signs before him by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast, as well as those who had worshiped his image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. The rest were killed with the sword coming out of the mouth of the One riding on the horse. And all the birds gorged themselves with their flesh.

Zechariah 9:10 RJPS

He shall banish chariots from Ephraim and horses from Jerusalem; The warrior’s bow shall be banished. He shall call on the nations to surrender,  and his rule shall extend from sea to sea and from ocean to land’s end.

Zechariah 12:10 RJPS

But I will fill the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem with a spirit of pity and compassion; and they shall lament to me about those who are slain, wailing over them as over a favorite son and showing bitter grief as over a first-born.

Zechariah 14:1-3 ESV

“1 Behold, a day is coming for the Lord, when the spoil taken from you will be divided in your midst. 2 For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken and the houses plundered and the women raped. Half of the city shall go out into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city. 3 Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of battle.

Zechariah 14:1-5 RJPS

“Lo, a day of GOD is coming when your spoil shall be divided in your very midst! For I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem for war: the city shall be captured, the houses plundered, and the women violated; and a part of the city shall go into exile. But the rest of the population shall not be uprooted from the city. Then GOD will come forth and make war on those nations as a fighter makes war on a day of battle. On that day, God’s feet will stand on the mount of Olives, near Jerusalem on the east; and the mount of Olives shall split across from east to west, and one part of the mount shall shift to the north and the other to the south, a huge gorge, and the valley in the hills shall be stopped up, for the valley of the hills shall reach only to Azal; it shall be stopped up as it was stopped up as a result of the earthquake in the days of king Uzziah of Judah.—And the ETERNAL my God, with all the holy beings, will come to you.
